If your kids are anything like mine, they love strawberries. My oldest son was asking for them before he could even properly say their name: he called them “fawferries”. But he has always loved their fresh sweetness and my youngest does as well. As picky as the baby is, he will eat strawberries anytime, anywhere. Thinking of how much they love this fruit (which to me is the epitome of Summer) is what made me jump on the opportunity to participate in a blog tour on the California Strawberry Commission.
Strawberries are more than just delicious, the are good for you too. There are so many interesting facts to be discovered about strawberries on the Comission’s website. Did you know that…
California strawberries:
- Are America’s favorite fruit
- Are available year-round
- Are enjoyed by the vast majority (94 percent) of Americans
- Have more vitamin C per serving than an orange
- Are naturally low in sugar – only eight grams per serving
- Rank second among the top ten fruits in antioxidant capacity (TAC)
- May help reduce the risk of heart disease, fight some types of cancer and lower blood pressure
I didn’t know all that, but I shouldn’t be surprised. And as if strawberries were not delectable enough in their own right, The Commission has added some tasty recipes to further bring out the flavors of this fabulous red fruit. I personally think the Strawberry Shrimp Ceviche sounds like a winner; although the one I am eager to try myself are the Strawberry Nachos.
Also be sure to check out Strawberryville with your kiddos. It is a cute interactive website targeted to children ages 5-12 with fun facts, games, and kid friendly recipes that your strawberry-loving tyke is sure to enjoy. There is even a section for parents and teachers with creative ideas on how to discuss (and use!) strawberries as a learning vehicle.
So the next time you pop a juicy berry into your mouth, or see that bright red juice running down your kiddo’s chin, think about how the California Strawberry Commission is making is easy for you to learn more about this healthy treat and pop on over to take a look.
